EMPRESS TEA - VictoriaIf you are going to travel to Victoria BC, you must make time for Tea at the Empress. Leave your double tall latte and partake in that most sophisticated of British traditions – Afternoon Tea. Victoria Express is running a special package that includes Tea and lodging at the Hotel Fairmont Empress through November 30, 2009.

The Empress has been serving tea in their lobby for nearly one hundred years. Pots of their secret blend tea adorn the tables, next to plates of freshly baked scones, heavy cream and berries. Pick a seat and gaze out at the Inner Harbour as you sip your tea and nibble on your pastry, or take part in that time-honored tradition of people watching. There is no better place to linger over a good cup of tea.

Ladies: gather together your friends and head to Victoria for a night at the Empress and an afternoon of tea. Victoria Express will arrange your travel and your accommodations at the Empress. You’ll have plenty of time to complete all of your holiday shopping in the many boutique shops of downtown Victoria. Dine at any of the excellent restaurants, and perhaps finish the evening with a game of darts at a pub. Learn the Basics of Soil Management

With more and more backyards sprouting gardens, why not go all the way and create your very own organic garden. Here is your opportunity to learn about the fundamental basics of organic gardening – your soil.

Gaia CollegeYour garden soil is an entire ecosystem, and needs to be properly managed to provide you with optimum results. The greatest biodiversity on earth should occur in the top few inches of your garden soil. Soil ecosystem health is as critical as proper watering and sufficient sunshine for plant health.

Soil processes are universal, applying equally to ornamental landscapes, agricultural crops and backyard gardens. Your job is primarily one of fine-tuning.

In this three-day intensive, professional workshop, Nov 13 – 15,  you will learn how to
- assess the health of your soil, and
- support the natural processes within the soil that result in plant health.

You will gain a deeper understanding of organic horticulture and how you can integrate organic practices into your own garden, landscape, or farm.

Topics include:
- Interdependence within ecosystems
- Soil ecology, biology and chemistry
- Soil/water relationship and water management
- Soil fertility management
- Soil testing
- Connecting plant health with soil health
- Pesticides and their effect on ecosystems
- Landscape health management vs. pest management
- Transitioning landscapes to organic practices

This workshop is ideal for gardeners, landscapers, turf managers and farmers who wish to eliminate their use of toxic chemicals.

If you have been practicing conventional horticulture, you will find your past gardening practices challenged and questions answered you didn’t even know you had. You will gain a deeper, more organic understanding of how nature works.

Friday, November 13th, 2009 – Sunday, November 15th, 2009, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Upon completion of the program you will receive a Certificate. This weekend workshop is held at:

Royal Roads University  – 2005 Sooke Rd., Victoria
