A World of Dickens that reveals not only the elegance of Victorian times, but the seamier side so often revealed in the writings of Dickens. Frontier Land pays tribute to Native Americans and hardy pioneers. The Great Canadian Railway will lead you through the vast Canadian wilderness. The list of wonders goes on and on.

The south end of Vancouver Island enjoys terrific views of Washington State's Olympic Mountains, on the Olympic Peninsula. Mount Olympus rises up nearly 8,000 feet, which is quite a dramatic height when compared with the surrounding sea-level. The Brothers, Mount Constance, and Mount Deception are a few of the other steep, often snow-covered peaks that rise out of the evergreen foothills. The sight of these glorious mountains is enough to inspire a person to take a passenger ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles, rent a car, and head for the mountains.

Hurricane Ridge, in the Olympic National Park, is a mere 45-minute drive from Port Angeles. The road curves and winds its way through forests until it runs along a ridge that affords stunning views. Hurricane Ridge is open daily during the summer months, and when skies are clear, the views are unmatched.

Stop by the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center for general information and trail maps. A paved path leading up the ridge from the parking lot is wheelchair accessible. Several other hiking trails head steeply into the wilderness, where the intrepid hiker will find subalpine lakes, meadows, and of course, more great views. Keep an eye out for whistling marmot, residents of the park.

Take advantage of our 20th Anniversary Season Special, with $20 round trip tickets for the ferry between Port Angeles and Victoria. There is a Budget Rental Car across the street from our Port Angeles terminal offering hourly and daily rates. Leave your car at home and lighten your travel load. San Juan Island is one of the greatest gems of the Pacific Northwest. The San Jan Islands tend to be sunnier than much of the Pacific Northwest, thanks to the Olympic RainShadow, and the weather is generally more mild. You'll find a strong arts community, good restaurants, and excellent lodging. There is outstanding outdoor recreation: miles of hiking trails, ideal conditions for biking, and extraordinary kayaking.

Many folks would visit San Juan Island much more often if they didn't fear the ferry lines. Time spent in long car lines during a weekend getaway feels like precious minutes lost.

When you travel by Victoria Express ferry to San Juan Island, you may breathe a sigh of relief and leave your car at home. Once in Friday Harbor, your island transportation needs will be met by San Juan Transit.

San Juan Transit will meet you at the ferry dock and whisk you away to your lodging. Once settled, you may call upon San Juan Transit to take you just about anywhere on the island, from Westcott Bay Sculpture Park near Roche Harbor, to San Juan County Park, to the San Juan Vineyards for a little wine tasting. You need not feel constrained by not having a car, plus San Juan Transit has a great day rate!

San Juan Transit will drop you at a hiking trail and pick you up at an allotted time. They'll take you to the point of departure for a kayak trek, or a whale watch tour. If you feel like simply sitting back and taking in the sites, try one of their narrated tours of the island.

This summer, don't let the ferry lines cramp your style. Hop on board the Victoria Express ferry to Friday Harbor, and travel throughout the island on San Juan Transit. Scenic travel between Victoria BC and Friday Harbor begins June 25, 2010. It's easy.

The Natural History Gallery at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria brings visitors back in time to experience dramatically different environments. Lush tropical forests and ice-bound tundras were both part of the landscape of British Columbia at one time. Mammoths, giant bison, and mastodons walked where we now dwell. The next time you visit Victoria, why not explore the ancient history of this ever-changing planet and learn about its present and future.

Your chance to see what goes on behind the curtain at the Royal BC Museum begins on June 25, 2010, when Royal BC Museum: Behind the Scenes opens. This is an ideal activity for families visiting Victoria. Meet the researchers who dive, dig and dredge during their search for scientific discoveries, and learn about what they do. New and ancient specimens will be on public display for the first time. And be sure to take your children to the new Amuseum - specifically designed for them - where the theme is sustainability. Children and parents alike will find this a fascinating exhibit.

Be among the first to experience this new exhibit, which runs through Monday, October 10, 2011.

Travel to Victoria from the Olympic Peninsula via Victoria Express. Victoria is easily accessible without a car, so don't bother bringing your automobile. You can spend a day or a week exploring the attractions in and around the Inner Harbour of Victoria.
