10 Good Reasons to Visit the Olympic Peninsula. #4 - Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.

You've decided to explore the coast of the Olympic Peninsula. You take the passenger ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles. You rent a car at Budget, just steps away from the Victoria ferry terminal, and you hit the road. But where to start? The coast of the Olympic Peninsula is vast, beautiful, and largely untamed. It's best to begin with a visit to the Olympic Coast Discovery Center, part of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sactuary..

The Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary covers over 3,300 square miles. The friendly staff at the Olympic Coast Discovery Center on the Port Angeles waterfront will supply maps, tips about hiking trails, secluded beaches, and the best spots to catch a glimpse of a whale. They will give distances, driving times, and a host of other informative tips.

Perhaps you'll decide to drive to the tip of Neah Bay on the Makah Indian Reservation, where you can walk the beach for miles and visit the Makah Museum. Perhaps you'll head to La Push, where you can rent a cabin on the beach. Or drive beyond Forks to Kalaloch (part of the Olympic National Park) which boasts mile after mile of sandy beach.

The staff at the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary may recommend you stop by Chief Taholah Days, in Taholah Washington, to help commemorate the 1855 Treaty with a salmon bake and fireworks (July 1 - 4, 2010). They may send you to La Push on July 16 - 18 for Quileute Days, a celebration of the Quilieute culture. Or they may suggest you visit Neah Bay on July 19, 2010 to witness the Tribal Journeys Canoe Landing.

The Olympic Coast Discover Center is located at The Landing, 115 East Railroad, Port Angeles, (360) 452-3255. Ask them about anything from tidal charts to fishing licenses. It's worth a trip.
