December is a great month for ice hockey fans in the Pacific Northwest. The Victoria Salmon Kings will play eight home games at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre: three against Las Vegas, three against Stockton, and two against Alaska.
The Salmon Kings, part of the ECHL, have been Victoria’s team since the 2004-2005 season. They are not Victoria’s first professional hockey team; in 1925, the Victoria Cougars attained the Stanley Cup. However, between 1994 and 2004, Victoria was without a team. Where controversy lingers over the merits of an ECHL team vs a WHL team, the residents of the island agree that it is awfully nice to have a team once again. And the Save On Foods Memorial Centre, built to welcome the return of professional hockey to Vancouver Island, is an impressive facility.
Residents and visitors of western Washington State can benefit from Victoria’s good fortune. Crossing the Salish Sea to Victoria is a cinch – Now is the time make your hockey plans. Gather together your fellow hockey fans and head to one of the December games of the Salmon Kings.
