San Juan Island is one of the greatest gems of the Pacific Northwest. The San Jan Islands tend to be sunnier than much of the Pacific Northwest, thanks to the Olympic RainShadow, and the weather is generally more mild. You'll find a strong arts community, good restaurants, and excellent lodging. There is outstanding outdoor recreation: miles of hiking trails, ideal conditions for biking, and extraordinary kayaking.
Many folks would visit San Juan Island much more often if they didn't fear the ferry lines. Time spent in long car lines during a weekend getaway feels like precious minutes lost.
When you travel by Victoria Express ferry to San Juan Island, you may breathe a sigh of relief and leave your car at home. Once in Friday Harbor, your island transportation needs will be met by San Juan Transit.
San Juan Transit will meet you at the ferry dock and whisk you away to your lodging. Once settled, you may call upon San Juan Transit to take you just about anywhere on the island, from Westcott Bay Sculpture Park near Roche Harbor, to San Juan County Park, to the San Juan Vineyards for a little wine tasting. You need not feel constrained by not having a car, plus San Juan Transit has a great day rate!
San Juan Transit will drop you at a hiking trail and pick you up at an allotted time. They'll take you to the point of departure for a kayak trek, or a whale watch tour. If you feel like simply sitting back and taking in the sites, try one of their narrated tours of the island.
This summer, don't let the ferry lines cramp your style. Hop on board the Victoria Express ferry to Friday Harbor, and travel throughout the island on San Juan Transit. Scenic travel between Victoria BC and Friday Harbor begins June 25, 2010. It's easy.

Ride the ferry to the Belfry Theatre
Belfry Theatre in downtown presents Bordertown Cafe. This play is a co-production with Prairie Theatre Exchange from Winnipeg, and is another great play from the Canadian canon. Take advantage of the scenic ferry to Victoria and cross the Salish Sea to take in an afternoon or evening at the theatre. You won’t want to miss a show that the Hamilton Spectator calls “…humorous, human, touching and recognizable…”
This play is a gentle and funny slice of Canadiana, filled with quirky and endearing characters. 17 year-old Jimmy, who grew up in a greasy spoon on the US-Canadian border, has a big decision to make. His soon-to-be-remarried father wants him to come and live with him in the States. His mother, Marlene, trapped in a life of missed opportunities, can’t seem to say the words “don’t go”. Marlene’s gregarious American mother won’t shut up. And her quiet farmer dad refuses to tell Jimmy what he should do. You’ll be touched and amused as you watch one gawky teenager become a young man.

There is always a reason to cross the Salish Sea and visit Victoria. Here is a compelling reason for fans of Joan Didion and the theatre to visit Victoria: The Belfry Theatre’s presentation of “The Year of Magical Thinking”, a one-woman play based on Didion’s memoir of the same name.

Seanna McKenna in The Year of Magical Thinking at the Belfry Theatre
Seanna McKenna, one of Canada’s leading actresses, is well suited to this one-woman play based on Didion’s memoir. She embodies the intelligent woman whose life is suddenly confronted by grief. Compassionate, funny, and heart-wrenching are all words that come to mind – along with unforgettable. This is a deeply thought-provoking and ultimately uplifting theatrical work of art for the holidays.
The Belfry Theatre is in the heart of downtown Victoria, an easy walk from the ferry terminals at Inner Harbour. Leave your car in the United States and enjoy a getaway to Victoria
The Year of Magical Thinking runs through December 13. Please see The Belfry Theatre for more details.
