What could be better than a day spent enjoying a scenic cruise to and from San Juan Island, with three hours in between devoted to art? It's easy to do with our San Juan Island Day Cruise.
We depart from Port Angeles in the morning, pick up passengers in Victoria, and head around the Saanich Peninsula, through the Haro Strait and around San Juan Island to Friday Harbor. The ride is indeed scenic, with mountains at every turn - the Cascades to the east, the Olympics to the south, and the mountains of Vancouver Island to the west. The food on the ferry is good, the coffee fresh, and the company pleasant. It's a fine way to explore the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
We dock in Friday Harbor in time for lunch. You may choose from gourmet restaurants that feature everything from "multiethnic menus" (Backdoor Kitchen) to classic Pacific Northwest cuisine (Downriggers Restaurant). Or grab some fish and chips to go and take in the view from Circle Park.
Once your appetite has been satisfied, it's time to explore the art of San Juan Island. There are several excellent galleries in Friday Harbor itself: Waterworks Gallery features the work of "eclectic artists from the Pacific Northwest" and showcases sculpture as well as paintings and drawings. The Arctic Raven Gallery features Arctic and Northwest Coast Native walk; it is home to an outstanding collection of Nothwest Coast Indian masks, wood carvings and prints. Island Studios features a variety of works by artists who live in the islands.

If time permits, ride San Juan Transit up to the San Juan Islands Museum of Art and Sculpture Park, just outside Roche Harbor. Currently on exhibit in the museum is a fascinating collection of works by artists expressing what "green" means to them, and the sculpture park is always a magnificent spot to explore.
You'll have a solid three hours to explore the art galleries of Friday Harbor and San Juan Island. If you think you'll need longer, turn the Scenic Day Cruise into a scenic weekend. Victoria Express will make all your travel arrangements, including accommodations.

According to the castle’s website, “Craigdarroch was built between 1887-1890 for Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish immigrant who made his fortune from Vancouver Island coal. This legendary Victorian mansion, built on a hill overlooking the City of Victoria (Craigdarroch means “rocky, oak place” in Gaelic) announced to the world that Robert Dunsmuir was the richest and most important man in Western Canada…. The immense fortune of the Dunsmuir family is reflected in the four floors of exquisite stained glass windows, intricate woodwork and fabulous Victorian era furnishings.” A trip to the castle makes a delightful outing for anyone interested in Victorian architecture.
