Fisgard Lighthouse sits perched on volcanic rock on Vancouver Island's Fort Rodd Hill, where it has helped to guide ships safely to Victoria Harbor since 1860. It was the first permanent lighthouse on Canada's west coast, and is a Canadian National Historic Site. Fort Rodd Hill is a coast artillery fort built in the late 1890s to defend Victoria - similar to those found in Washington State, such as Fort Worden in Port Townsend and Fort Casey on Whidbey Island.

The lighthouse and fort sit on a beautiful piece of land overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with Victoria to the east. Washington's Olympic Mountains rise in the distance, making it a very photogenic spot. Garry Oaks dot the landscape, and harbor seals and sea lions lounge on the rocks; birdwatchers will want binoculars to scan the horizon for great blue herons, bald eagles, and a variety of other winged creatures. A trip to Fisgard Lighthouse makes a terrific afternoon excursion from Victoria.

In addition to a beautiful natural setting, the Fisgard Lighthouse features interesting exhibits on the the light itself, its keepers, and "the graveyard of the Pacific" (as the waters off this coast were once known).

Victoria's Killer Dinner Theatre

Presents

“Murder on the Oriental Rug!”

Move over -- or roll over-- Agatha Christie! Victoria's Killer Dinner Theatre is about to unveil a mystery dinner show that spoofs old-fashioned whodunits, the medical profession, “female problems,” and theater folks! When half the cast of “Murder on the Oriental Rug” bails out, the remaining performers are stuck playing all the roles. During the first act, you’ll meet a Shakespearean actor with a drinking problem, a washed-up former child star, a bimbo with a short memory, and a hapless costumer who finds herself onstage -- playing a man.

During the “play within a play,” you’ll visit the exclusive clinic of Dr. Charles Ovary, renowned hot flash specialist who’s secretly treating a famous actress trying desperately to regain her youth. You’ll get to know the doctor’s devoted but clueless wife, his passionate female protégé, the actresses’ hunky husband, a flighty French maid, a shifty handyman, and an inspector investigating the dead body on the Oriental rug.

Will the play make it to Broadway? Will the performers remember their lines? Will the Shakespearean actor fit into the maid’s costume? Will the chalk outline come out of the rug? Will the inspector solve the murder? Will another murder occur?

Before the evening’s over, someone else will be ruthlessly murdered, and it’s up to the audience to solve the crime.

Victoria's Killer Dinner Theatre is presented at the Travelodge Victoria, 229 Gorge Road East.

Tickets are $39.99 and includes a 3 course dinner plus the show. (drinks excluded) The show opens Saturday June 26, and runs Fridays & Saturdays throughout the summer beginning at 6:30pm.

Reservations can be made by calling 250-361-6246.

The Canadian Navy’s Pacific Fleet will mark the Canadian Navy Centennial with an International Fleet Review that started June 9th and ends Monday, June 14th, 2010. Twelve ships from the Indo-Pacific Region are expected to gather at the Royal Roads anchorage in the approaches to Esquimalt Harbour.

Victoria B.C. prepares to welcome upwards of 8,000 sailors from around the world and provides the public a chance to establish a closer connection to the modern navy. The countries represented in the review include Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand, US Navy, US Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard

The Maritime Museum of BC is offering a 50% military discount on admission to celebrate this momentous event. “The Fleet Review is a wonderful opportunity for the citizens of Victoria and Vancouver Island to see an international fleet of navy vessels. It is a real compliment to Victoria and to the Canadian Navy that they would agree to be our guests,” says Harry Martin, long term Maritime Museum of BC volunteer and retired Merchant Navy and Coastguard Officer. The Museum is expecting to see many of these honored guests grace their own doors during the coming days to discover more about the history of the Canadian Navy.

The Maritime Museum of BC, located in the heart of Bastion Square, currently has a special exhibition on Art in the Navy highlighting some unique pieces, and also features a Royal Canadian Navy exhibit. The  Maritime Museum features elements on the foundation of the Navy and its early role in protecting the Pacific.

The Maritime Museum of BC has a wealth of artifacts and history and is a fantastic place to get a glimpse back into the nautical customs of the North Pacific. With exhibits ranging from pirates to heritage vessels and Victoria’s original 1889 Courtroom, the MMBC is always a fascinating visit.

The Natural History Gallery at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria brings visitors back in time to experience dramatically different environments. Lush tropical forests and ice-bound tundras were both part of the landscape of British Columbia at one time. Mammoths, giant bison, and mastodons walked where we now dwell. The next time you visit Victoria, why not explore the ancient history of this ever-changing planet and learn about its present and future.

Your chance to see what goes on behind the curtain at the Royal BC Museum begins on June 25, 2010, when Royal BC Museum: Behind the Scenes opens. Welcome To Forks...

Welcome To Forks...

What is it about VAMPIRES?

How do they manage to get under our skin, and keep us up at nights thinking about them, reading books about them, watching movies about them? It seems that most everyone goes through a vampire stage at some point between adolescence and the golden years – they are so alluring, mysterious, and strangely attractive. Bram Stoker knew their appeal. So did Anne Rice. And now Stephenie Meyers has tapped into the world of the Undead with her Twilight series. The books are wildly popular, as was the first film. The second film, New Moon, is due out late this fall.

Those of us who live in the Pacific Northwest are proud of Forks, Washington, which is home for the Cullen family. We want to show visitors around. Twilight fans from Victoria will be pleased to learn that they may go from Victoria to the land of Vampires and Werewolves in Just One Day.

The passenger ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles departs at 9:45 AM; upon arrival in Port Angeles, visitors will be swept away to Forks in style by Dazzled by Twilight Tours , where you will have time to explore the town where the Cullens don’t sleep and Chief Swan keeps law and order. At 3pm you will be taken to the house Bella and Charlie call home, the Cullen House, The Hospital where Dr. Cullen works and the Police Station where Chief Swan spends his days when he isn’t out fishing.

Across the treaty line in Werewolf territory, you will learn the history of the Quilieute People while gliding past some of the most incredible scenery in the northwest – the Washington Coastline. You will see where Jacob went to school and where he lives now. And of course, no Twilight Tour is complete without a stop in Port Angeles, where Edward and Bella had their first date. You’ll have time to visit local Twilight landmarks before boarding the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria, which departs at 9:30pm.

It is a full day, to be sure, and it is well worth it. If you are visiting the Pacific Northwest, when is the next time you will be able to get such a glimpse into the Forks of Twilight? If you live in the Pacific Northwest, you simply must experience the Forks of Vampires and Werewolves. Call the Victoria Express for details.

July 1 was Canada Day, when Canadians in Victoria stepped out in great numbers to celebrate being Canadian. Victoria was hopping all day to the sounds of live music as people created an enormous living Canadian flag, participated in walking tours, rode in horse-drawn trolleys and strolled through Market Square. Enthusiastic fans also attended a baseball game.

Take the passenger ferry to watch the Victoria Seals

Baseball, you say? Yes, Victoria has its own team, the Victorian Seals, and fans are not merely Canadians. Some folks on the Olympic Peninsula consider the Victorian Seals to be their home team. It’s true, although they don’t say that too loudly for fear of insulting fans of the Seattle Mariners. But you have to admit that it is easier to ride a passenger ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria than to drive all the way to one of those other ferries in order to cross Puget Sound.

The Victoria Seals are at this moment engaged in a four game series with the Tucson Toros. It’s not too late to be spontaneous and catch the last game of the series, on Friday evening. Or plan ahead a bit: the Seals will be hosting the Edmonton Capitals and the Yuma Scorpions over the coming days, and will play at home frequently during July and August. Check out the Seals‘ schedule.

The ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria offers numerous specials that include lodging in Victoria; they are a great value. Make a long weekend out of it, or a mid-week vacation, and take in a game while you are there. See how the Canadians put their own twist on baseball.

Passports or enhanced drivers licenses are now required for travel between the United States and Canada.

There is a lot going on in and around Victoria, BC this weekend. Since this is also the last weekend when travel between Canada and the United States is permitted without either a passport or an enhanced driver’s license, why not hop on board the passenger ferry from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, BC and have a little holiday?

Plan on spending Saturday night listening to four of the greatest voices in the world. Il Divo creatively blends opera with popular music, and the results are out of this world. In fact, they have awed audiences around the world with their versions of “Amazing Grace” and “Power of Love”, among others. David Miller, Carlos Marín, Urs Buhler & Sébastien Izambard are not to be missed.

Canadians have been fans of Il Divo since their inception, and Saturday’s concert is guaranteed to leave listeners breathless. Staged and choreographed by William Baker (Kylie, Jamiroquai) on a state of the art set, with a tour wardrobe designed by Giorgio Armani, the show will certainly look as good as it sounds.

Saturday night is set. Now, what to do the rest of the weekend? The Selkirk Waterfront Festival is one thought. Sponsored by the Burnside Gorge Community Association, and located on the beautiful Selkirk Waterfront, this event is perfect for the whole family. There will be live cultural performances, interactive workshops, a family fun zone, food and vendors. This is a perfect way to be out in the great weather and experience a little culture, too.

Or, take the ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria and attend Fired-Up! Contemporary Works in Clay. This pottery show at Metchosin Hall in Metchosin, BC has been going on for 25 years. The combined experience of participating potters adds up to 750 years, which means a lot of clay has passed through these able hands. This show will display a great deal of innovation and even more talent, and should be seen by anyone who enjoys the ceramic arts.

This legendary Victorian mansion, built on a hill overlooking the City of Victoria (Craigdarroch means “rocky, oak place” in Gaelic) announced to the world that Robert Dunsmuir was the richest and most important man in Western Canada…. The immense fortune of the Dunsmuir family is reflected in the four floors of exquisite stained glass windows, intricate woodwork and fabulous Victorian era furnishings.” A trip to the castle makes a delightful outing for anyone interested in Victorian architecture.
