With the Classic Boat Festival fast approaching, the finishing touches are being completed on the Maritime Museum of BC’s beautiful little heritage boat Trekka. She has been lowered into the water once again in preparation for her move to the Inner Harbour for the Labour Day long weekend this September 3rd, 4th and 5th.

A local favorite, Trekka’s claim to fame is having circumnavigated the world close to three times. After travelling the world, Trekka was brought back to Victoria, where she was originally built, and is one of the Maritime Museum of BC’s three prized heritage vessels.

A dedicated group of volunteers have spent the past several months working to get Trekka water ready after a winter spent hibernating at the S.A.L.T.S. shipyard. With some fancy new brightwork and several coats of varnish on her now, Trekka is dressed to impress and is ready to please the crowds and the Classic Boat Festival.

Be sure to visit the Maritime Museum in the heart of Bastion Square. Their three floors of exhibits span many centuries of nautical heritage representing the regional waters that connect our two nations. Many nations and cultures are represented and there is something to captivate every member of your traveling group.

There are many good reasons to visit Victoria BC. One of them is the Rooftop Surfclub Patio, on top of the Strathcona Hotel.

When the weather is fine and the beach beckons, there is no finer place to be than Victoria's Rooftop Surfclub Patio. It is, truly, the best of both worlds. There is outdoor dining, with a wide variety of lunch and dinner items.

There is an open air barbecue grill. And there is a sandy volleyball court - even if you don't like to play, you have to admit it's fun to watch.

Certainly not everyone goes wild over bugs, but you have to admit that they are fascinating little creatures. Or not so little, as the case may be. The Victoria Bug Zoo has some pretty big bugs on hand, and while you are there you may even hold a few in your hand. If you feel adventurous, consider taking the scenic passenger ferry to Victoria this summer, and spending an afternoon at the Victoria Bug Zoo. You won’t be disappointed.

There are creatures from all around the world at this bug zoo. From giant walkingsticks to glow-in-the-dark scorpions, you will be stunned at the wide variety of insects and spiders that have made their way to Victoria. Canada’s largest ant farm is here, along with a 400 leg millipede as long as your forearm. Really. The fact that you can put that millipede on your forearm makes it truly worth a visit.

The Victoria Bug Zoo is an easy walk from the Victoria passenger ferry dock. This would make a great day trip from Port Angeles, or part of an extended Victoria getaway. The Victoria Express offers a variety of overnight specials in Victoria that include round trip ferry tickets, lodging, and fun activities in Victoria.

Remember that passports or enhanced drivers licenses are now required for travel between the United States and Canada.
